Welcome to the Department of Surgery at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. The goals of our department are to offer the Northwestern community of patients, medical students, residents and faculty high-quality educational opportunities, compassionate clinical care, and ongoing research. The aim of this site is to offer information pertaining to those three areas, and as you navigate the site, you will find a wealth of materials with the appropriate contact information. However, should you need something that you do not find here, please contact the administrative offices.
Our Mission: To improve the lives of people (our patients, faculty, staff and trainees) by providing optimal surgical care within an academic environment.
Our Vision: We will be recognized and respected as one of the premier academic surgical programs in North America and train the next generation of outstanding surgeons.
Our Motto: "Safer surgery today, better surgery tomorrow."
The department of surgery consists of eight clinical divisions, 166 full-time and contributed service faculty members, and 68 residents and fellows who teach, learn, and work at affiliated hospitals in the city and surrounding suburbs. Many faculty members serve in leadership positions of regional and national surgical societies or on advisory committees of federal agencies. Faculty members engage in a variety of basic science, clinical and educational research.
The department has an established and well-respected surgical residency program, with approved fellowship programs in plastic surgery, critical care, cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, breast, and organ transplantation. The department also operates a state-of-the-art skills laboratory to allow residents and medical students to practice their technical and clinical judgment skills to enhance skill development and patient safety, as well as practice minimally invasive surgery and laparoscopic skills. Continuing medical education courses are also held to help practicing physicians hone their skills with new technology.
The strength and success of the department is a direct result of the hard work, dedication, and loyalty of our faculty members, residents, and staff. We believe you will find those qualities reflected in this site.
