PSTP Training in Surgery

The PSTP experience is designed to facilitate the development of surgical residents into academic clinician-investigators. This pathway is designed for the M.D., Ph.D. or M.D. graduate with extensive research experience who is interested in a career in academic surgery and investigation. This track is designed to allow the resident to complete American Board of Surgery requirements in general surgery while providing time for intensive laboratory work under the tutelage of a faculty mentor.

Upon joining the program, the PSTP Scholar is linked with a Career Mentor who serves as a sounding board for decisions involving program structure, choice of a Research Mentor, and long-term career issues.  The Research Mentor is chosen as the Scholar determines the ideal research environment for career development; this can occur at any time during the first several years in the program. Trainees may work with any research program at Northwestern University. Click here for more information on the Surgery residency program.

Financial Support

During Residency training, the PSTP Scholar is supported with supplemental funds for books, journals and travel to programs at which s/he is making scientific presentations.  Additional support is available for some laboratory expenses.
