Several faculty members in the Department of Surgery are national and international leaders in surgical education, as well as education scholars. Faculty members teach courses held in the US and other countries on topics ranging from how to teach to how to evaluate and provide feedback to learners.  Other faculty serve on national committees and boards related to education.  Faculty are productive in securing educational research grants, authoring peer reviewed research publications, and giving presentations related to some aspect of student, resident, or general clinical education.  All newly hired faculty members are asked to attend a six session faculty development program designed to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to become effective teachers and coaches.

Several faculty members hold PhD’s or Master’s degrees in education, while others graduated from the American College of Surgeons’ “Surgeons as Educators” course and/or the Association for Surgical Education’s Research Fellowship Program.  Several faculty members won national teaching awards.  Some individual are sought out as visiting professors throughout the US and elsewhere to speak on various topics in surgical education and share what we are doing here in Northwestern.
