The Trauma/Critical Care Division delivers integrated state-of-the-art surgical care to critically ill and injured patients at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. NMH is an Illinois-designated Level I Trauma Center. The Division of Trauma/Critical Care coordinates the multidisciplinary care of trauma patients. Particular emphasis is placed on effective and timely care, with seamless integration across surgical and medical disciplines.
The Trauma/Emergency Surgery Service evaluates and manages the full spectrum of emergency and acute care general surgery consultations. Surgical expertise spans a broad range of gastrointestinal, biliary tract, and soft tissue surgical illnesses.
The Division provides comprehensive critical care consultations for all surgical patients requiring intensive care. Specialized services include mechanical ventilation, nutritional support, invasive monitoring, fluid and electrolyte management, therapy for infections, hemodynamic management, and emergency interventions.
The Division faculty have diverse research interests including the response to inflammation and sepsis, computational modeling of responses to physiologic perturbation, epidemiologic studies of trauma care and domestic violence, and outcomes analysis in critical care.
