Welcome to the Plastic Surgery Resident Program.

While it is the belief that the primary goal of all physicians is patient care, there must also be a strong desire on the part of a program director to provide the highest quality of training possible within the program he or she directs. You will find that this philosophy extends throughout the Northwestern training program and that issues involving the resident staff and residency training receive a high priority. The specifics of the program are detailed throughout this web site; the purpose of this introduction is to give you an idea of the underlying mission and direction of the training program. The mission of the program is to give an unequaled opportunity for a motivated resident to accumulate and master all of the requisite skills to embark upon a productive career in plastic surgery in which he or she will make a notable contribution to plastic surgery.

The interview and application process represents an opportunity for us to learn more about you and your personality, goals, and objectives. It also gives you an opportunity to learn more about the personality, goals and objectives of our training program. It is our belief that the residency program at Northwestern provides an unparalleled experience clinically. The first three years of the integrated program provide an outstanding foundation in surgery. This is followed by a one-year laboratory experience, which provides an opportunity to obtain grounding in laboratory or clinical research, and at the same time does not excessively prolong the residency training length. The final three years consolidate the plastic surgical experience and though the combined resources available at Northwestern. The Jesse Brown Veteran's Administration Medical Center, Children's Memorial Hospital, and Shriners Hospital, provide an unequaled clinic opportunity. We are particularly proud of the independent decision making experience that is available in the final year. The chief-resident aesthetic surgery teaching clinic at Northwestern is quite busy and provides invaluable experience at a critical time in the training process. This, combined with the experience at Shriners Hospital in evaluating and managing difficult pediatric reconstructive problems including cleft lip and plate and ortognathic surgery, produces a chief resident experience that is unmatched in the country.

Today's plastic surgery applicants represent the future of the specialty of plastic surgery. It is an extremely diverse and exciting specialty.
