Dr. Patrick McCarthy received the 2008 Socrates Teaching Award. The Socrates Award is an annual award given by the Thoracic Surgery Residents Association to an outstanding faculty member in cardiothoracic surgery in recognition of his/her commitment to resident education and mentorship. In addition, Dr. McCarthy was recently awarded membership to the prestigious national honor medical society of Alpha Omega Alpha (ΑΩΑ).
Dr. Richard Lee was elected President of the Medical Faculty Senate Council (MFSC) of the Feinberg School of Medicine for the 2009-2010 academic year.
Dr. Kim Lebowitz was featured on ABC’s Good Morning America in October. The story discussed the positive effect of psychological therapy on cardiac surgery outcomes.
Research
Drs. Patrick McCarthy (PI) and Chris Malaisrie (Co-I) are participating in the PARTNER Trial (Placement of Aortic Transcatheter Valve) for patients with severe aortic stenosis who are either inoperable or very high risk for conventional aortic valve replacement.
Dr. Edwin McGee (PI) is participating in the Evaluation of the VentrAssist™ Left Ventricular Assist Device as a Bridge to Cardiac Transplantation to evaluate a new heart assist device as a treatment for end stage heart failure patients who require circulatory assistance while waiting for a heart transplant.
Dr. Richard Lee (PI) is participating in the Medtronic Concomitant Utilization of Radio Frequency Energy for Atrial Fibrillation (CURE-AF) Study to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the Cardioblate Surgical Ablation System for treatment of permanent atrial fibrillation.
Education
Dr. Patrick McCarthy, along with Dr. Richard Lee, directed the course entitled “Atrial Fibrillation Surgical Ablation: Concomitant and Stand-Alone; Why, How and Results” at the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) University in January 2009.
Dr. Edwin McGee directed the course entitled “Mechanical Circulatory Support for Cardiogenic Shock – Adult” at STS University in January 2009.
The Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute (BCVI) launched a physician shadowing program for Northwestern University undergraduate students, co-directed by Dr. Richard Lee, Michael Yensel, and Susan Fox. Since officially kicking off in late October, over 60 Northwestern undergraduates have enrolled and shadowed in a variety of 20 different disciplines.
- The 3rd Annual Cardiothoracic Surgery Alumni and Graduation Day takes place at Northwestern Memorial Hospital on June 26th, 2009. Dr. Denton A. Cooley, President Emeritus and Surgeon-in-Chief of the Texas Heart Institute, will be the guest lecturer
